Traveling, pilgrimage, our longing for places far away all have their roots in our pastoralist origins. Moving cattle from summer pastures to winter pastures (trans humance, such as is still practiced in Spain, France and in the Alps). The landscapes we instinctively like and the way we lay out our gardens are all related to our nomadic pastoralist roots. Pilgrimages are symbolic nomadic journeys. Here’s a clip from “Salt Men of Tibet“, a German documentary on the annual pilgrimage to gather and bring back salt. And here’s a clip on the Transhumance. Of course, these are dangerous transitions. Historically, livestock might be lost, which could undermine the economic foundation of entire villages. Seasonal transitions have much the same characteristics.
