Right after L. was born, I looked into his eyes and saw the adult he was going to become. Because a soul is arriving, fresh from his time in the bardo of becoming, looking into their eyes means looking at them in the bardo after dying, and perhaps also the bardo before death. Then, in a flash, that moment passes. I believe it is in kabbala that there is the thought that human beings are born with perfect knowledge, then, right after birth, an angel comes and in a flash removes it, so that humans will learn. Because only in this way will they surpass the angels and come nearer to Gd. J. remarked on this as well, I believe it was his experience too. Then there is a time when very small children are still very much in touch with their pre-birth experience. With L. this lasted quite long. When he was four, he would still tell us about the former life that he remembered. Then those memories faded.
I’ll be off for most of this week, so posting may be sketchy. Going in for treatment is another way of being “born”, I feel. It produces opportunity, potential. What’s the saying in islam? Work for yourself as if tomorrow were your last day, work for the world as if you have eternal life. All the time I will need.
